How Your Diet Can Affect Snoring

One of the simple things you can change to help improve snoring problems is your diet.

If you are overweight, reducing your calories and starting an exercise program to lose weight can definitely help. Men only need about 20% of excess weight to cause snoring.

If you are not overweight, there are other dietary changes that can help. Some types of foods are known to increase your chances of snoring while others may reduce your chances.

One of the foods that can cause snoring is milk and milk products. This is especially true if you have them before bed.

Milk improves mucus production, which can block the flow of your throat. Although cheese can have the same effect.

To find out if this is why you snore at night, stop eating dairy products within 4 hours of sleep. If you've been doing this for a few weeks and notice a decrease in your snoring, this may be one of the triggers.

In that case, you have several alternatives. You can start using dairy alternatives such as soy milk or simply limit your consumption at night. This may not completely eliminate your snoring but it should make a significant improvement.

Allergic reactions to certain foods can also cause snoring problems. If you notice (or are told) that your snoring gets worse when you eat certain foods that day, keep a log of 2-4 weeks and see if you notice any relationship between food and snoring.

If you find any similarities try cutting it for 2-4 weeks and see if the problem disappears.

Another more general rule to help reduce snoring is not to eat big or eat fatty foods in the evening.

Before making any major dietary changes, you should always consult with a healthcare professional to get their opinion.
