Common Causes of Dog Diarrhea

People who have dogs usually know how diarrhea in dogs works, as it is quite common. The true cause of diarrhea, different causes and types are known to people with less.

Dietary changes are one of the causes of diarrhea. If you give your dog food specifically made for him, and then you change his food and you feed him regularly, he may get diarrhea as a result. Another possible cause for diarrhea is to change the type of water he or she receives, especially if you are traveling.

Food changes are especially problematic for puppies, as they have sensitive intestinal tract. If the dog was bought from a breeder, he might tell you that he should be fed the same as he had in the past. You need to know how the dog ate before, if you weren't told when you bought it, especially if you brought it from a friend or from a newspaper ad. Either way, you should talk to your veterinarian about the dog's diet, so you can be sure that the puppy has the right food for their breed and age.

If your puppy has received a raw food diet in the past, and you are giving away commercially available foods, you will need to make the transition gradually, from old to new. To begin with, you can put some commercial foods in raw meat, mixing them slightly. Every day, increase the amount of food you put into meat, while reducing the old type of food. Gradually changing your diet will prevent diarrhea in dogs.

Overweight and obesity are two other causes of diarrhea. Both dogs are getting too much or not enough food to be exposed to the disease. A dog who does not eat enough will bear himself when he finally finds food. It is possible that dogs are less prone to diarrhea if they are fed twice a day instead of getting all the food in one meal. Both a veterinarian and a breeder will recommend that you eat your own food, which means that a dog gets a full meal, which he or she chooses to eat. You do this with your usual dry foods, so diarrhea is quite rare.

Drinking too much water is another possible cause for diarrhea in dogs. If it happens when it's not hot outside, drinking water can point to other problems, so visit your veterinarian to find out.
