Your Abdominal Fat and Dementia

In a recent article in the Journal of Neurology new research has shown that having a big stomach in your 40s can increase your risk of developing Alzheimer's disease or other dementia decades later.

Research shows that it's not just about your weight. Previous research has shown that obesity in the middle ages improves your chances of developing dementia later. This new study found that the risk of having fat in your stomach is different. Even those who are overweight are at risk.

Unhealthy BMI (body mass index) has been shown to increase current risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke and dementia. This study in the Journal of Neurology showed that participants with normal weight and high abdominal measurements were 89% more likely to have dementia. Overweight people are 82% more likely to have lower abdominal size and more than twice as likely to have high abdominal size. People who are obese are 81% more likely to have lower abdominal size, but three times higher if they are high in weight.
