A University of Montreal study shows the relationship between obesity and sleep. Increased hormone stimulation of appetite and decrease in fat burning hormone are both the result of poor energy and sleep.

"One of the more interesting ideas that has been boring and now gaining momentum is an appreciation for the fact that sleep and sleep disorders do incredible things to the body - including possibly affecting our weight," said associate professor David Rapoport, MD, and Program director Sleep Medicine at New York University School of Medicine in New York City.

At least a dozen studies have documented that people tend to weigh more if they sleep less, said Sanjay Patel, M.D., a researcher at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. In a 16-year study of nearly 70,000 women, Dr. Patel and colleagues find that those who sleep five hours or less at night are 30 percent more likely to gain an extra 30 pounds than those who get more rest. In fact, some experts believe that lack of sleep is one of the causes of the American obesity epidemic. The average woman gets six hours and 40 minutes of sleep almost every night, according to the National Sleep Foundation - less than seven-and-a-half hours of our specialists say the needs of women are healthy.
