One in four adults is 18 or about 60 million Americans suffer from high blood pressure. Hypertension, as it is also known, is a serious health condition that can affect an individual's overall health. Prolonged high blood pressure can lead to heart disease, stroke, aneurysm, and even death.

Alcohol is also a contributing factor to hypertension. Lack of sleep and reaction time are not the only effects of drinking alcohol. Taking too much alcohol increases one's blood pressure, and abuse of alcohol can also cause problems related to hypertension.

A person's lead lifestyle is also often reflected in their blood pressure readings. Those who have a sedentary lifestyle do not use the heart to make it stronger, leading to high blood pressure readings. Starting a workout routine will make the heart stronger and lower one's blood pressure.

Finally, what people eat also predicts what the blood pressure will read. People who eat a high diet of cholesterol, fat, and sodium are more likely to have hypertension. Removing the aforementioned dietary factors from your diet and adding fruits and vegetables is a great way to lose weight and reduce blood pressure.
