The Fallacy in the Food Pyramid

I'm sure you've seen the food pyramid issued by the US Department of Agriculture. The version released in the 1970s had fat and candy on top that meant you ate less of it, and the complex grains and carbohydrates at the bottom meant you ate the most. There are a few things you need to know about whether these suggestions have been made to ... or affect health ...

The Origins of the Food Pyramid

The government has been interested in what people eat since 1894. The main evolution of what is now food pyramid is:

  • 1894 First diet proposal of the United States Department of Agriculture

  • 1916 "Food for Young Children" was published

  • 1941 recommended daily allowance was established

  • 1943, to address food rations, "Basic 7" was established

  • 1970 added "unhealthy group" of fat, sugar and alcohol

  • 1988 graphic food pyramid was developed

  • 1992 graphic food pyramid, now released

Problems in the Food Pyramid

One major difficulty is that the original proposal for the current pyramid in the 1980s was ignored. Dr. Luis Light is one of the most educated and knowledgeable people who has been asked to develop a food pyramid. He was surprised to find that the panel's proposals had been changed to make them more appropriate (though intended) for the food industry.

The Commission recommends that grains and other carbohydrates be eaten less and not as a basis for a meal plan. There are some other changes as well. Dr. Light fears that this change will lead to obesity ... which is now a major health problem in the United States.

Carbohydrates Can Be a Problem

Brian Peskin inside 24 Hour Diet quotes from many textbooks and studies over the years. About the carbohydrates he plucked from the mass Basic Medical Biochemistry - Clinical Approaches... that I mentioned here to show her medical relevance. There's this chemical I've never heard of in carbohydrates. It's called, for short, G3P ... which means, if your eyes don't burn ... glycerol-3 phosphate.

Before I give you an important quote, know this about G3P:

  • It is made from carbohydrates

  • It's only in carbohydrates

Here is the devastating Pyramid Food Quote: "Only if you get G3P from eating a lot of carbohydrates will any fat you eat turn into fat." The problem is carbohydrates

Everyone who burns the American Food Department of the Pyramid of Food recommends that eating is the major cause of fat in your body.
