Doctors warn: energy drinks cause obesity for children

U.S. doctors have warned that children are at risk of drinking caffeinated energy drinks and herbal supplements.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, the largest pediatric organization in the United States, has warned of the dangers of energy drinks and called for a distinction between them and sports drinks that children who exercise can take, according to Live Science.
In a statement, Drs. Marcy Schneider and Holly Benjamin noted that the reviews show that "caffeine and other supplements are not in the food of children and adolescents."

The doctors explained that some children can drink sports drinks, as long as they have enough movement to burn them.

Benjamin explained that the obesity of children is not the result of overeating, but the result of drinking a large amount of calories, and called for limiting the intake of milk and juice even in exchange for too much water.

A previous study had shown that some children who had consumed energy drinks had to be taken to hospitals for treatment of poisoning.
