Best Diet For Diverticulitis

We often have stomach ache especially if we eat too much or suffer from stress; However, if these symptoms are frequent, it may be time for you to visit your family doctor for any underlying conditions you may have. For people over 40, one of the common health problems they face is diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is a condition in which the sac or diverticula forms in the lining of the intestinal wall. For some people, mild cases can be treated with rest, lifestyle modifications and antibiotics. That said, persistent symptoms will mean different treatments or surgeries for the patients involved.

Signs and Symptoms

People with diverticula in their lining may not experience pain at all; However, some people, especially if diverticula is inflamed, may have nausea, fever, constipation / diarrhea and tenderness in the left abdomen.

The cause of the diverticula is unknown. Some have speculated that there are some weak spots in the colon, which give way to stress and the risk of increasing with age. In addition to aging, conditions also affect smokers, use of certain drugs, inactive lifestyle and the use of high fat animal foods but low fiber content.

The Best Diet for People with Diverticulitis

Patients with mild diverticulitis cases may benefit from modifying their diet including switching to a diet rich in fiber. Fiber is ideal because it helps the rest of the body move through the intestines and colon quickly.

Examples of fiber rich foods include starchy foods with high fiber content such as brown rice, pasta, pita bread, chocolate bread, naan and whole foods. One can also include breakfast cereals such as muesli, porridge, chopped wheat and bran for a diet. Fiber-rich vegetables include potatoes, carrots, peas, peas and even Brussels cabbage. Peanuts are also rich in fiber and are not included in the diet as small seeds may get stuck in the pouch; however there is no scientific evidence and therefore is included in the diet. Almonds, mixed beans and peanuts have high fiber content.

In some cases, doctors may also recommend a fluid diet especially if someone has an attack. Clear liquid diets can include soup or stock, gelatin, ice cream with fruit or nuts, water and tea or coffee.
