Mind, Body and Acid Reflux (GERD)
Do you remember when you once had butterflies in your stomach? You can't wait to get a "phone call" or see "that person" again. I still get it now - when I'm excited about the event or looking at my family (on the east coast). The connection between the emotions and the GI tract is just amazing. But years of stress - mental, emotional, and physical stress, can cause .... BURNING! BURNING! BURNING!
Over 60 million Americans suffer from GERD every month, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease) is commonly known as acid reflux, acid digestion, dispepsia or heartburn. Common symptoms are:
- Heartburn (rising, burning sensation behind chest).
- Gastric acid regurgitation or salty content in the mouth
- Difficulty swallowing
- Chest ache
- Sore throat / dryness.
- Acid regurgitated into the lungs - cough / sneeze
- Dental enamel damage
- Gas / Inflatable / Striped
What causes GERD? Problems in sphincter muscles in which the stomach and esophagus meet. These lower esophageal sphincter are designed to allow food to enter the stomach and store it there. When the muscles are weakened, it allows the stomach contents to flow back to the throat. This can cause structural damage (hiatal hernia) due to stress and unhealthy eating. It can heal!
This is the thing. Some people spend hundreds of dollars a month on reflux acid. What if they cure the problem and don't need to buy prescription drugs or OTCs for acid relief? Reflux, heartburn and GERD can be cured without a prescription. In fact, drugs, including OTC, are actually harmful in the long run, as they block stomach acid. The problem is that we are deceived when we feel acidity; we think there is too much acid. But in fact, GERD is a TOO LITTLE ACID condition. Acid is present, escaping to the throat due to weak spleen muscles. It's a body scam! What we feel is the opposite of what happened; we become hypo acids (acids are too small). In all fairness however, I would say that sometimes people are hyper acidic, have too much acid, and both hyper and hypo acid conditions can benefit from the following dietary recommendations:
Eliminate Culprit Foods:
- Coffee
- Fast food and fried foods (gall bladder pressure)
- Cooked tomato products, pizza
- Orange fruit, juice
- Clams and pork
- Onions and garlic
- Carbonated drinks
- Wine, beer, hard alcohol
- Very seasoned and seasoned food
Therefore, the lack of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, for the early stages of digestion, is usually the cause of GERD. Also, most people suffer from lack of digestive enzymes, as the pancreas does not produce the right balance of digestive enzymes. So gas, bloating, belching, diarrhea, constipation can cause. We often see this in people with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), who have confirmed the pancreas with long-term, high-carbohydrate intake.
Over half of people over the age of sixty have low gastric acidity.
Simple tests that natural health professionals can offer to diagnose GERD, ulcers, low or high acidity:
- Manage pH and lemon challenge tests
- PH Channel (Check yourself at home to make sure your treatment program works.)
- Urine Bio Terrain Test - check for acidity, dehydration, vitamin and antioxidant deficiencies, infections and markers of dysbiosis
- Blood tests for Helicobacter Pylori bacteria in the intestines, which can cause ulcers and gastritis
- Complete digestion and stool analysis - examining levels of good bacteria, bad bacteria, yeast and parasites, markers for inflammation, and digestion of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates
- Energy evaluation of Bio-response to body organs
Other suggestions for GERD, stomach acid:
- Take hydrochloric acid supplement (Avoid if you have ulcer.)
- Uses digestive enzyme supplements, aloe juice or pulp, glutamine (amino acids)
- Raise the head of your bed by 6 inches to stabilize the contents of your stomach
- Avoid lying down for 2 to 3 hours after eating, giving the stomach a chance to clean something
