How To Make Healthy Decisions When Eating Out

It's one thing to eat healthy at home when you master what you have - but eating on the go can sometimes lead to a healthier eating habit. Traveling and eating out is part of life - and it's fun, don't you think? So being confident and comfortable with making healthy choices with the choices you make is an important part of pursuing your healthy lifestyle.

The holidays are just a few months away, with your calendar overflowing with holiday parties. So now is the time to get this under wraps so you can sail straight into the holiday season confident that you will not enter the new year with any unwanted extra pounds!

Here are some simple tips you can take with you wherever you go ...

Don't be afraid to ask. If you're having trouble finding something healthy on the menu, don't be afraid to request modifications. For example, if you're at an Italian restaurant with a menu full of pasta - consider substituting pasta for broccoli or spinach. You still get the toppings and sauces, but without the full plate of extra carbs. This dish is still fresh!

Avoid drinking your calories. This happens anytime, but the easiest way to make healthy small changes is to choose water. This is obviously the healthiest option, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy green tea or a glass of red wine along with your water. Balance is everything, but water is a priority.

Prepare yourself before leaving. Dining on the menu is tasty and healthy can be time consuming and not the kind of task you want to do while you are at a restaurant. It can be smart to look at the restaurant menu before hand, which is usually available on their website. From the comfort of your own home, you can research the healthiest food, and you'll be ready to order when you get there without learning the menu for ten minutes!

Another of my favorite tips is to order my appetizer with a side salad. The amount of food you get with appetizers and small side salads is usually just the right amount - unlike the over-the-top portions you often find on the menu.

So, as you can see, these are simple hacks that can make a difference in the quality of the food you eat while eating. With healthy restaurants popping up everywhere, it's becoming easier and easier to find healthier options when eating, so take advantage of it and you'll feel better about it too.
