Don't Eat That! - Foods Dogs Should Not Eat

We all know what it looks like: that's where your dog asks for a piece of dinner or a delicious dessert. You know you can't, but one bite can't hurt. Or can I? There are some human foods that your dog can never eat because they can get sick or even die from the food we offer on a daily basis. Common foods we need such as fruits and vegetables can endanger your dog's life.

Being educated on dog food is so important that you know exactly what to do in an emergency. You also know what human food is acceptable for your dog. It is also important to teach children what foods are not safe for their family pet, and to eat them carefully.

Below we discuss what dog food you can't, and what you should do if your dog swallows it.

BUY

1. Grapes (and raisins) can cause sudden kidney failure in your dog if they are ingested as they become extremely toxic to dogs.

2. Tomatoes are not edible if they are green because they have toxic solanin in them and will make your dog very sick.

3. Apples can only be eaten by dogs if the core and seeds are removed or your dog may get sick from it and may choke on the core.

4. Cherries contain small amounts of cyanide, which is harmful to dogs, but in small doses can be fine for humans. If swallowed, find your dog having trouble breathing, pupils spread, and red gums.

5. Avocado is a fruit containing Persin which is found in the leaves, seeds, and in the avocado itself and can cause your dog to vomit, especially if it is allergic, but it is not life threatening.

VEGETABLES

1. Mushrooms are indestructible because some of them can cause death, and your dog may be allergic to them because they are fungal foods.

2. Onions, as well as garlic, are terrible for dogs because they contain Allium which is a poisonous plant to dogs and cats. Once swallowed, your dog may be sick, nauseous, vomiting, stomach ache and will use the bathroom a lot, and their red blood cells may rupture!

3. Asparagus is not recommended for dogs. There is no nutrient for your dog to cook slowly and, if eaten raw, it is difficult to chew for your dog, so they may not like it.

Drink

1. Alcohol is not recommended for your dog because they can be as drunk as humans and may have vomiting, poor coordination, shortness of breath, and their nervous system may become depressed. Alcohol can also cause your dog to fall into a coma or die.

2. Caffeine can poison your dog if given too much, and it can cause their heart to race, their breathing to accelerate, tremors and extra energy. This stimulus is not good for your dog and can kill them, so don't give them pop soda, tea, coffee, energy drinks or anything with caffeine in the ingredients.

3. Milk and all dairy can not only cause stomach upset for your dog, but it can cause diarrhea. Some dogs are allergic to milk, called Lactose Intolerance, which can cause vomiting.

OTHER

1. Macadamia nuts can kill your puppies, although only a few can kill them. Some symptoms include tremors, vomiting, fever, rapid heart beat and weakness. Some dogs may experience paralysis and may die from this.

2. Candy and Sugar are not good for the dog because they can choke on them, but they also have xylitol in them and it makes your dog's body more insulin than it needs and the blood sugar level can go down, which is dangerous. They can also have heart failure to be careful because of poor coordination, vomiting and lack of energy.

3. Chocolate is one of the so-called dangerous for dogs because it contains Theobromine and will make your dog thirst, vomit, and get the best diarrhea. Worse, your dog's heart rhythm can be abnormal and they may experience seizures, tremors, and even death.

4. Meat or fats like bone and fat can hurt your dog. Fat can cause pancreatitis and bone can cause your dog to choke and if swallowed, can tear your dog's stomach.

5. Raw meat can make your dog sick and get food poisoning. Foods like raw fish can have parasites that can affect your dog's lymph nodes and cause fever and vomiting. Always cook meat carefully.

WHAT TO DO

If your dog has swallowed any of these foods and is sick, get them from food or poison as soon as possible. Take them to the nearest veterinary hospital for treatment. Call ahead if you can so they can be ready for your dog. It is recommended to take some vomiting if it can be tested at the veterinarian's office. If you are not sure what to do, you can contact the pet poison hotline for assistance.

PREVENTION

Keep all foods, as well as medications or household products confined or placed where dogs cannot be reached. When preparing dangerous food for your dog, leave it in another room or outside so that they cannot be tempted to eat any food that falls to the floor. If you are unsure if you can give your dog a specific food, research it or not give it to them in case of illness or allergies.

While Fido loves to eat most of the food and can't see their own health, as an owner, it's your responsibility to keep your pet safe. They can boil delicious fruit salads and apply chocolate cakes for dessert, remember that you keep them alive by refraining from giving in and ruining their appetite!
