 Adding calorie information to foods has not contributed to reducing obesity


As part of a comprehensive effort to stop weight gain, King County in Washington has tagged price lists on all restaurant chains to create a comprehensive check-up of the calories they eat when purchased.

Eric Finkelstein, associate professor of health services at Duke University at The National University of Singapore, says: Given the results of previous studies, we were expecting certain results, but we were surprised that we were unable to detect minimal changes in physical behaviour, and the results suggest that mandatory labeling unless other interventions are added may not have a significant impact on the obesity epidemic."

Researchers at the Seattle County Department of Public Health, in collaboration with the National University of Singapore, conducted the research for 13 months and agreed that this did not change individuals' dietary habits.

But as part of the health care reform, the federal government has plans to release mandatory nutrition information when buying from takeaway restaurants at about 20 or more outlets.

Strombotin Kirsten adds: " However, detailed information about food is not the best way to convey the content of fast food health, for example if you know a place that serves regular diet and soda and does not have a calorie count, they do not serve diet soda to contribute to the reduction of calories ".

Finkelstein said: " There is a simple motto to determine which foods are right, it may be all that is necessary to pass on that information to those consumers who want to choose a healthy alternative, and there are people with additional information that make no difference."

Finkelstein noted: " The obesity epidemic will continue to increase even after the National Ready-To-Food Team has been asked to provide a list of nutrition facts, and we need to do more studies to identify sources of information that are most likely to encourage consumers to switch to healthy choices.
